What effect does incorrect punctuation have?

Incorrect punctuation has a number of effects:

  • it can change the meaning or sense of a passage
  • it can make a passage difficult to read
  • it stops the flow of the passage
  • it frustrates and irritates the reader
  • it suggests the writer is at a low academic standard.

This is why punctuation is so very important.

See the Practice for this section for an example.
